Ex-Penn St. assistant Sandusky convicted of abuse

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) — Jerry Sandusky was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years, accusations that shattered the Happy Valley image of Penn State football and led to the firing of Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno.

Sandusky, a 68-year-old retired defensive coach who was once Paterno’s heir apparent, was found guilty of 45 of 48 counts.

Family of Joe Paterno rejected Penn State Nittany Lions stadium naming deal, report says – ESPN

Penn State officials, in an attempt to get the family of Joe Paterno to sign away its right to sue the school, offered to rename Beaver Stadium after the late coach, The Patriot-News has reported, citing a source close to the family.

But the family said no.

Paterno had never been keen on the stadium bearing his name, an idea that “has always been a fan-driven matter. It was never important to Joe,” the source told the Harrisburg, Pa., newspaper.

DETROIT — The NHL’s Winter Classic has grown bigger each season of its five-year existence. It’s only fitting that the next stop for the Jan. 1 outdoor game will be at Michigan Stadium, known by many as “The Big House.”

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Thursday morning the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic — between Original Six rivals Detroit and Toronto — will be played at the home of the University of Michigan’s football team in Ann Arbor.

“These two Original Six rivals will take the Winter Classic to a new record-setting level,” Bettman said in announcing the game.

Bettman made the announcement at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, which will host the Hockeytown Winter Festival, a week-long celebration of the game at all levels.

Petition seeks ‘Fighting Sioux’ vote – NCAA.com

BISMARCK, N.D. — Is it the return of the Fighting Sioux? Supporters of the University of North Dakota’s nickname turned in more than 17,000 signatures Tuesday night to cap a petition drive to force a statewide vote on a moniker the NCAA says is insulting to American Indians.

Campaign organizers said they had gathered far more than the 13,452 signatures needed to put a question before voters in June.

Reed Soderstrom, chairman of the referendum campaign, said organizers counted 17,213 names. The petitions were delivered to Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s office about 10:15 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Jaeger planned to check the count Wednesday. He has 35 days to review the petition and decide whether it is sufficient to qualify for the ballot.
